The gardens were beautiful. A lot of detail has been put into them the pathways for walking which are spacious and very easy to navigate. There’s a lot of signs also with descriptions which I found really helpful. In terms of the gardens there are very beautiful displays but overall my favourite is probably the choreograph garden. I believe it’s called which is like the main centrepiece. Another thing I liked is that there are lots of viewpoints where you’re able to look out and see Funchal in all its beauty from different prospectives. They have toilets which are free to use near the south and north opening and exit. There is also a café where you’re able to eat and have a drink among the gardens. If you’re into horticulture, this is definitely for you or if you just want to experience the iconic places in Madeira then equally you may enjoy this.
For reference, I caught the number 20 bus to get here and it cost me €1.95 . You can also get here via the cable car or if you want to take a Taxi you can but it’ll most likely be more expensive.
Absolutely beautiful gardens and a nice day out. Not for people with mobility issues as most areas are steep to access. The reason for my low score is the appalling conditions the flamboyance of flamingos are living in. They are a small group living on a piece of concrete in a tiny enclosed space, they’re literally only there for photos. It’s very cruel. The floor they’re standing on is covered in excrement. Flamingoes are very sociable and like to live on large groups, they also like to have water to wade in. It’s really upsetting to see them existing like this.
Absolut empfehlenswert! 🌿🌺
Underwhelming!
An entrance with broken ticket machines and barriers as well as weeds everywhere sums up this place.
The "lake" can best be described as a stagnant pond whilst the museum needs an awful lot of care and attention.
The gardens are covered in weeds, littered with broken pathways and lack general maintenance.
It could be an incredible place but currently it is not worth the entrance fee.
Disappointed. Seem quite shabby and unkempt. The turtles were lovely and so was the little cafe. Very hilly. Didn't like the animals in jars nor the stuffed birds.
Beautiful botanical garden showing the true colours and nature of Madeira Island. We were able to see flowers, plants and trees from Madeira but also from other countries. The view is breathtaking, the view to Funchal/Ocean and the view to Monte/Mountain. It is not small but also not a huge garden, so expect around 2h to see everything properly. There is 2 cafes with breathtaking views, however a little bit pricey. Take the opportunity to visit the museum/colonial house. We really enjoyed our time here!
Top tip: You can go from Funchal to the Botanic Garden by UBER/Bus. And after from the Botanic Garden you can go to Monte Palace Garden (the most beautiful garden in Madeira) by cable car (the quick ride is so beautiful) so from Botanical Garden to Monte. And after visiting the Monte Palace Garden you can go back to Funchal by cable car (Monte to Funchal).
Tuin nr. 3 in onze beoordeling, maar nog steeds zeer de moeite waard. Leuke vergezichten over Funchal. Diverse tuinen van bloemen, kruiden, cactussen etcetera. Sommige delen minder goed onderhouden.
This was our 4th visit to the Botanical Gardens, the previous being 10 years ago. What a difference this trip was and not in a good way. The beds were full of weeds in some areas, there were large areas without planting and the aviary is now closed.
It is very uneven underfoot with the paths having lots of missing stones/paving. We were very disappointed, such a contrast to the wonderful Palheiro Gardens.
On a positive note, the bus from the city was cheap and kept to the timetable.
